Hi
I installed Slimserver on standalone Music Server Hifidelio from Hermstedt.
http://www.hermstedt.de/english/hifidelio/hifidelio.html

What is Hifidelio ?
CD-Player, MP3-Player, Server (Linux), WLan AP, Audio-Recorder, CD-Ripper,
CD-Burner
all built on Linux-Platform.

All you need is one or more Squeezeboxes, the Hifidelio and nothing else for
a running system.
Who is interested in more details just ask.

Ok.
- First I had to enable a telnet session for the hifidelio box.
This is described in the hifidelio user forum.
Short form : Take update iso-image, change rc.local script to copy telnet
session.
If somebody is interested I can send him the modified iso-image

- Now copy the Slimserver perl source to the Hifidelio import folder. (samba
share on Hifidelio)
You can get access to this folder with normal smb-client (Windows, MAC,
Linux)

- with telnet I created a new directory (/usr/local/slimserver/)
- with telnet I copied slim source to this directory and extracted it with
gzip and tar
- now I could start the server with the command perl
/usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --daemon
- at then end I edited the rc.local script and added the (perl
/usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --daemon) command to the script for
running slimserver on startup.

Now you can connect with the Squeezebox wireless interface to the Hifidelio.
No accesspoint is needed. I think it's a very simple multiroom system and
much more powerful
if you compare it e.g. to the Yamaha system. And much cheaper as well.

Regards
Beat

The poster referred to a modified ISO image - I thought I needed that.
I will try the regular Linux download first.

I have downloaded the SlimServer software but it needs compiling and I
don't have make or the gcc compiler on my Hifidelio - could someone
please send me the pre-compiled SlimServer for the Hifidelio platform?

Slimserver is perl code and doesnt need compiling.
The windows EXE install is compiled and does require rebuilding if you
want to incorporate changes.

Any other install, simply needs a perl interpreter (not gcc) installed
on the system.

No the perl script complains about the XML:Parser not being compiled -
when you run the suggested perl script to compile it, it complains
because you need make and gcc installed. So part of what runs is
actually compiled on the platform.

Good to know, as when I saw Hifidelio at a show they knew of
Squeezebox, but hadn't tested it as a player.

It is in many respects a nice idea, as a dedicated music computer it
allows automated ripping of CDs and looking at a CD database, etc.

Do you know, what kind of hardware is being used inside? How is the
performance?
I am surprised, that they use a 2.5" notebook HD. The case should be
large enough for a normal HD.

Does the WLAN support WPA?

The price is also acceptable. Instead one could buy a headless Mac Mini
but then you don't have the software, display and remote control.
Although it could be fun to build Mac Minis as pre-configured home
media servers.

- Samsung MP0804H HD
- PLD Atmel ATF1502 (vermutlich zur Anbindung des Displays)
- CD-Rom Drive Matsushita CW-8123-B

They use a 2.5" HD to prevent noise (they say)
There were some guys who made a modification with 3.5" HD, but they needed
an external 12V power supply.
But you can also mount an external HD to the USB-Port and mount it, or use
NAS-Server.

I don't know if the WLAN supports WPA, I don't need it.

I also had a look to MAC Mini, but with the Hifidelio I have a "closed"
system. No need
for Display, no external power supply, easy CD-Player on main room etc.

Beat

Only Hermstedt's Hifidelio Hard Disk can be connected. This allows
easy backup and restore of the contents of the Hifidelio.

Yes, you can.

With the telnet hack you can mount a normal USB-Drive.
Some guys have put a second 2.5" HD in it.

Great. That makes Hifidelio much more interesting. I wonder if they
will ever provide official instructions for some of these hacks. Or
perhaps, once it has a wider circulation in the UK, there will be a
forum in English will all that kind of information.

Somehow I feel this thread is going the way of a commercial. While it's
clear that having ripping and storage all in one box without having to power
up a computer has some appeal, ask yourself if you really want to rely on

- automated ripping

The only two pieces of software that can more or less guarantee bit-perfect
rips are EAC and, if you own a Plextor drive, Plextools Pro. The catch -
these are both for Windows. CDparanoia on Linux works as well, provided you
have a drive with no audio cache, which is rare these days. Maybe you could
telnet in and find out their ripping method, and maybe it's kosher but
that's way too many maybes in my book.

- closed storage

It seems the Hifidelio's disk is encrypted, meaning you can not by normal
means get your data out of there again. The whole point of ripping a CD is
only having to do it once.

So I, personally, wouldn't use it for ripping or for storage of my master
ripped files. For playback it's a fine piece of equipment I'm sure, but for
that we use a Squeezebox.

The Hifidelio disk is not encrypted - it is a regular Linux file system
and all the tracks are stored in subdirectories of /audio/music with a
directory per artist and then a subdirectory per album and then the
actual tracks.

Out of the box this music directory is not accessible however you can
use telnet to get onto the box and then just change the Samba config
file to expose this directory. You can then access or backup your
music files across the network.

Dear Simon (or anyone who knows about the Hifidelio)

I own a Hifidelio Pro-S. After 5 years the unit has stopped working –
the initial curtains don't open and then the unit freezez. I think the
problem is the HDD - it clicks 10 times for 5 sets and then stops.

I would be most grateful if you (or anyone else) could introduce me to
someone who could help me fix it.

Best regards
Matthew

In contrary. The more I know about it, the less I like it.
128MB RAM, usable only with unofficial hacks (if you want to use it
different than what Hermstedt had in mind), etc. - no way.

He didn't really answer the question regarding performance. How is a
333Mhz PPC with 128MB RAM supposed to encode in an acceptable speed and
run a slimserver well? Can't imagine that. The only thing I like about
it is the case and the display.

Exactly. I can't think of a device less suited to be used with SlimServer,
really.
