This is Dudley from a the Logitech UE product team. I am happy to
announce that the software to update your Squeezebox Radio to the Smart
Radio platform is now available in countries where Smart Radios are
sold. To update your Squeezebox Radio to Smart Radio, sign into
mysqueezebox.com and follow the instructions there. Squeezebox Radio
users that choose to update can:

- Use the new Smart Radio Controller mobile app
- More easily create and access favorite playlist, albums or artist
- Sync their updated Radio to other Smart Radio devices.

This update is optional and some users may choose to not update their
Squeezebox Radios to Smart Radios. To find out more about the updating
process and how it will change your existing Squeezebox Radio
experience, please visit mysqueezebox.com and click on Lean More.
Additionally, only Squeezebox Radio users can update to Smart Radio.
Squeezebox Classic, Duet, Touch and other Squeezebox device cannot be
updated to Smart Radio. Logitech will continue to support these products
with troubleshooting and support, the mysqueezebox.com website and the
Squeezebox Controller Mobile App.

The key issue is whether this process can be reversed?
I'm wondering the same thing, and if it's not possible to reverse it,
I'd really advice Logitech to put it in the FAQ unless they want to get
a lot of angry customers, I tried to indicate in this post earlier
today:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Share-Your-Thoughts/Question-to-add-to-UE-Smart-Radio-upgrade-FAQ/m-p/917852#U917852

To anyone seeing this, please consider that the manual reverse method
might not work after you have pushed the button on mysqueezebox.com, in
worst case the mysqueezebox.com configuration will ensure your
Squeezebox is immediately "upgraded" to UE Smart Radio again if you
manually try to reverse it. Hopefully this isn't the case, but I can't
say for sure and I'm not prepared to waste one of my Radio's just to try
it.

Of course, offering a way back will be needed, even if it isn't be
supported already now, it's a just a matter of time until enough users
complain about it.

And the *other* key issue is whether the Smart Radio version allows you
(reversibly) to connect the player to either one of 1) LMS (last
released version), 2) mysqueezebox.com, 3) my-ue-thingy.com ??

Don't we already know? The UE radio uses only the UE.com server and the
local UE server.

UE Smart Radio or Squeezebox with UE Smart Radio firmware can connect
to:
- UE Music Library 10.x
- LMS 10.x (this is very unofficial and it's not clear if this will ever
be officially tested and released)
- uesmartradio.com

Squeezebox with traditional Squeezebox firmware can connect to:
- LMS 7.8 or earlier
- LMS 10.x (this is very unofficial and it's not clear if this will ever
be officially tested and released)
- mysqueezebox.com

If LMS 10.x is used, it can theoretically serve both Squeezeboxes and UE
Smart Radio devices, but they will still work as two completely separate
systems, you can't synchronize them and with a Squeezebox remote you can
only control Squeezeboxes and with a UE Smart Radio remote you can only
control UE Smart Radio devices. Since the devices still work as two
separate system there isn't much point to use the same server,
especially since you can run both LMS 7.8 and UE Music Library 10.x on
the same machine and then run officially tested software.

Not for me thank you. I like my Radio as part of my Squeezebox family
and I see no compelling reason to downgrade and make it a standalone
unit.

Has anyone yet attempted the manual downgrade approach on a Smart Radio,
i.e. one that was purchased as such and not one that started life as a
Squeezebox Radio? If such a downgrade (or depending on your point of
view, 'upgrade') is possible then we'd at least have a source of
replacement hardware, even if it's currently pricier than the Squeezebox
version.

It seems like this is a slightly less risky experiment. If a Smart Radio
always tries to convert back after being converted to a Squeezebox, then
you'd be no worse off than when you started.

Unless it totally breaks when you load Squeezebox firmware on it so it's
not able to start and thus not able to load new firmware. I know
Logitech always did a lot of quality assurance of the firmware loading
on the Radio before they pushed out a new firmware exactly because of
this, if the device doesn't start with new firmware there is no easy way
to go back. On the Touch it's different because there you can just
insert a SD card or USB stick with the firmware and make it load through
lower level routines, but this isn't possible with the Radio.

I still find it amazing Logitech has decided to orphan the Boom, Touch,
Duet etc.. Those were all very expensive devices and well worth the
investment of Logitech to build Firmware for them. By not doing so,
Logitech will turn a percentage of avid Logitech/Squeeze fans into
naysayers.

This seems like a very silly move in my opinion since the cost of
continuing support of an older software must be significantly more
expensive that the costs of developing firmware for the other units.

I've found all the support I need here and I suspect that Logitech
realise that too. Therefore, the run-off support costs will be fairly
insignificant. Much of the software code is probably shared anyway so
any future bugs can probably be fixed across both platforms.

I wish them well with the UE range as whilst it's alive at least we will
have some shared functions and therefore support. If it fails and they
cease making network streamers altogether then that really will be the
end IMO.

I often use my SB Radio to access BBC Listen Again services. I use the
BBC Radio applet to do this. Would I still be able to get listen again
services if I upgrade to UE Smartradio?

No. At present Logitech do not allow any third party applet on a UE
SMartradio.

In future, are applets likely? If not, then another good reason not to
update.

There is no technical reason why Smart Radio can't support 3rd party
applets, but at this point Logitech have decided that they do not wish
to support this. So if you want to continue to use the BBC Radio and
other applets, please keep your radio as a Squeezebox as it will be more
flexible and able to continue to use applets such as BBC Radio.

Thanks to those who have answered my question. The BBC applet is crucial
to the way I use my radio (and my Touch), so I will not be updating to
UE.

I haven't tried the upgrade yet, but on uesmartradio.com there's a BBC
service listed. To anyone who has tried it - does the BBC applet have
different functionality than the UE one?

I upgraded my three Squeezebox radios to UE, and all went well. But I
notice on mysqueezebox.com that the orphaned Squeezebox radios are still
listed but with notation that they have been converted to UE. Is there a
way to remove these converted radios from the list?

Be careful:
1. The BBC implementation on UESmartRadio.com is the same as on
MySquezebox.com, it is NOT the extended one you get with the iPlayer
plugin or applet, most notably there are no "listen again" features
2. You can NOT "always" downgrade, you can only downgrade as long as you
have NOT made a second firmware upgrade so if you run your Radio as a
Smart Radio for too long, you might only be able to go back by manually
changing the firmware through the command line.

I'm sorry but there's no way I'll go this route - I've LMS, an SB radio
and a couple of receivers all working beautifully, I was after a Touch
but given Logitechs actions I've bought my last ever Logitech product,
no more mice, keyboards etc, we had a Logitech reseller trying to push
the products into the company I work for but I spoke with our purchasing
exec and put her off the idea. All done and dusted - they lost my custom
the day they dropped the SB platform. As you can probably tell I'm still
pretty mad about it - dumb, dumb decision made by some clown who really
has no idea what they had.
